The Department of Antiquities, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge will host an international Symposium on the theme of public engagement with collections of the Ancient World in European museums on March 16-17, 2015.

In this two day Symposium, we will be looking at the range of strategies and ideas currently employed by European Museums with Ancient World collections to engage their public with aspects of ancient material culture. We will also be discussing the influence, the different pattern of evolution of curatorial and academic disciplines in different countries has on contemporary public engagement initiatives. European museums and collections that have recently undergone, or are currently undergoing major refurbishment programmes are particularly invited to share their experience of how their ideas of redisplaying antiquities have shaped, or are shaping, a new relationship with their audiences – and who these are.

Participants

Prof. Dimitrios Pandermalis (President, New Acropolis Museum, Athens), Dr Martin Maischberger (Deputy Director, Antikensammlung, Berlin), Dr Despina Kalesopoulou and Ariadne Klonizaki (National Archaeological Museum, Athens), Dr Jody Joy (Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Cambridge), Prof. Matthias Wemhoff (Director of the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte, Antikensammlung Berlin), Dr Nena Galanidou (University of Crete).
