Documentary sources from Egypt provide extraordinary glimpses into the everyday realities of Roman and late antique Egypt (1-7th c.). Economic, social and institutional aspects can be scrutinised based on papyrological sources such as letters, contracts and accounts which are almost totally absent from the other provinces of the Roman Empire. Recent years have seen a number of important studies offering new interpretations and raising new theoretical, historical and methodological questions in this area. The aim of this workshop is exploring the status questions in order to have a solid methodological basis for further papyrological research in Berlin.
